The Health Benefits Of Meditation

The STRESS of Daily Living

So, Why Meditate? In order to talk in-depth about meditation, we first need to talk about stress. In today's world, we're constantly having our attention pulled on by family, work, this commitment, that engagement, the other dance recital or soccer game. And for those of us who've added the commitment to live a healthy and fit lifestyle to the mix, the demand only compounds. I mean, it's not like modern culture is encouraging us to eat right and exercise. We have to Intentionally make wellness a part of our day-to-day lives. All these commitments compound upon us over time, often causing us STRESS. the enemy of our lives. Some consider stress to be hands down the #1 killer of mankind today, and experts believe that many of our diseases have their roots firmly planted in it's deep toxic soil.

What makes stress so dangerous is how our body naturally responds to it. Under intense emotional, physical or psychological pressure, our bodies release a corticosteroidhormone called cortisol. At high levels this hormone causes, high blood pressure and blood sugar, a lowered immune system, hair loss, weight gain, heart disease… shall I continue? The point is simple: Stress bad, very bad.

The good news is stress can be, if not totally removed from our lives, at least managed to the degree that your day can be defined by the good that you've experienced in it and not the things that stressed you out. dealing with stress is a skill that must be learned, we humans don't do it naturally. Animals like the zebra don't go around in the Serengeti with high blood pressure and receding hairlines, because… well for one, they don't actually have hairlines, but more importantly because their brains only have two responses as it relates to stress: on and off. So, right after a pride of lions has finished running roughshod all over a zebra heard, the zebra can be seen placidly grazing and even playing and mating with each other. We, on the other hand, thanks to the neocortex, or new brain, (that outer layer that sits atop our reptilian brain), have gradations of stress depending on the situation. We can be a little stressed, moderately stressed, very stressed or "SOMEBODY GIVE ME A GUN!!" stressed. As a result, we can go through an entire twenty-four hour period or more in complete nail-biting mode, not because of a lion attack, but because Sarah told us to get lost, or Jimmy took credit for our work on the job.

Enter Meditation

So, what is meditation and how can it help to reduce stress? Simply put, meditation is the act of returning the attention again and again to a point of focus. This may seem overly simplistic, particularly when I suggest that it can virtually eliminate the negative stress response, but I assure you, both as a six year practitioner and based on the empirical evidence, meditation is the real deal!

There have been literally thousands of scientific studies on the various forms of meditation over the past 40 years that have yielded some interesting findings. Meditation is not the same as deep rest or sleep or daydreaming. It has its own physiological marker and is characterized by high levels of mental alertness, coupled with very low levels of physiological arousal… which means your body is at complete rest, while simultaneously your mind is completely alert. It's important to get out of your mind the idea that you have to "space out", or go into a trance in order to meditate properly. However, the mind will naturally descend into alpha, theta and sometimes even delta brain states. Alpha is the mental state we're in when, say reading a book or studying. Theta is the state our brains are in when we're asleep and Delta is when we're in the deepest sleep state.

We also use less oxygen when meditating, in fact, in a whole night's sleep our oxygen levels never go down as much as they do within 2 minutes of meditation. This causes more blood to flow to our extremities. The point is that Meditation is a physiologically unique state.

Traits Associated With Meditation

Let's talk a little about meditation and the biomarkers of aging. Studies have found that the contrasting physiological markers of aging between meditators and non meditators are stark. For example, it's been found that the "real age" (or the actual physiological age of the body) of a meditator is 5 to 12 years younger than that of a non meditator. Other studies have shown improved vision and hearing and lower levels of cancer and heart disease. Also Lowered blood pressure and elevated levels of melatonin characterize the regular practitioner. Essentially, with meditation, you just have less stress and a younger physiology, and really that alone is enough of a reason to begin a daily meditation practice.

How to Meditate

There are two types of meditation practice for you to choose from:
1. Meditation with form
2. Formless meditation

Meditating with form simply means that you choose an object to focus on during your session. You can use an object, such as a candle or maybe an appealing vase. But the "form" isn't limited to a physical object. The form can be your breath, an emotion like love or compassion. you can focus your attention on your heart. Even thinking on a loved one is okay. The idea here is to find a point of focus.
Formless meditation is actually the opposite of meditation with form. It's the dissolution of attention, the cessation of thought. This is the more difficult type of meditation and should be practiced after you've gotten comfortable with focusing, because that open mental space that characterizes Formless meditation is in itself a form to focus upon and if you can't focus onsomething, you'll be unable to focus on nothing.

A Basic Practice

It's important to wear comfortable clothing so that blood can freely flow and to avoid being distracted by discomfort. choose a quiet place in your home. Ideally you should designate this place as your place to practice. If you do, with time, you will automatically begin to enter into a meditative sate as soon as you go to that place. You may want to purchase a meditation mat and cushion (I got mine from dharmacrafts.comand after six years, it's still in great condition). If not, a comfortable chair is just fine.
Sit erect in your chair so that your back isn't touching the chair. Resting back on the chair will cause you to go to sleep because your back muscles will not be engaged. rest your hands, palms up or down, on your lap. Sit up straight. Your spine should be erect and head tilted slightly downward. Ensure that the tip of your tongue is on the roof of your mouth, just behind your buckteeth. You may either close your eyes, or leave them open, holding a "soft" gaze upon the floor a couple of feet in front of you. Now make yourself yawn at least three times. Yawning triggers a relax and focusing response in your brain, getting you in the state of meditation. It's actually one of the best thing you can do for your brain (For more on this, I recommend the book, "How God Changes Your Brain" by Andrew Newberg, M.D. and Mark Waldman).
Next, inhale slowly through the nose. As you do, notice how the air cools your nostrils as it passes through your nose and travels down the windpipe. Follow the journey your breath takes down to your stomach. Avoid allowing your chest to expand too much. Instead, you want your belly to rise as you breath in. Imagine that the air is filling your stomach and not your lungs. Mentally count this breath as "one".
Next, gently release your breath into a full exhale, expelling all of the air. exhale until your diaphragm tightens a bit. count this as "two". Continue the cycle up to ten breaths and then count back to one.
When you get distracted, and you will, start over at one. This is meant to develop your concentration muscles. Once you're able to count from one ten then back one for two cycles without having to stop, your ready to inquire into more advance forms of meditation.
There are numerous meditation courses that are available today, but if you want to teach yourself to go beyond the basics then I highly recommend purchasing a program called the Integral Life Practice Starter Kit, available at amazon.com.

Proven Meditation Tips on How to Meditate Deeply

In this article we give some proven meditation tips that have worked for many. In fact these very tips are used by monastics and true yogis - people on who have dedicated their lives to meditation.

Anyone who has tired to meditate knows how difficult it is to meditate deeply. So why is the ability to know how to meditate deeply so important? Because it is those deeper states that you will really receive the benefits of meditation.

Many of the of these tips are simple and straightforward but as with anything worthwhile they need to be practiced. Then when you apply them to your meditation you will understand why one great Yogi Paramahansa Yogananda has said in relation to meditation. "You don't know what you are missing".

Daily meditation - meditation tip number 1, on how to meditate deeply

Daily meditation or regular meditation is perhaps one of the single biggest tips on how to meditate deeply and advance on the spiritual path.

Why? Think about it for a second in what direction is our thoughts, attention and our energy directed most of the time, during our waking state. For the vast majority of us it is nearly always directed outwards into the world we live. When you consider that many of us in the west don't come to some form meditation until we are adults - that is many years of conditioning, practice and habit. So what happens when we sit to meditate? Immediately the mind wonders occupying itself in bodily sensations, memories of the past and future thoughts. It has been said that when practicing some form of spiritual discipline you are either growing or digressing. You are never allowed to become stagnant. That is why it is so important to practice daily meditation. Preferably in the morning carrying the peaceful effects of your mediation into your day and then again at night before going to sleep. In the beginning start with 15 mins and gradually work your way into a longer and longer period. Ideally if you have worldly responsibilities 30 min morning and night.

Group meditation - meditation tip number 2, on how to meditate deeply

Group meditation is another secret tip that is not as well know about. Jesus spoke of it's principle in the bible when he said "where two or three are gathered in my name there am I". I've heard the principle very aptly described this way.

Imagine you are holding a single magnet of a certain size and strength at the end of a piece of string and next to it is a metal bar. The single magnet on it's own is not strong enough to attract its self to the metal bar but when that single magnet comes together with other magnets the combines force and strength easily attracts themselves to the metal bar.

The metal bar in this case is God and the individual magnets are us. There is in fact a force (consciousness) in our spine that is forever being drawn down toward by the earths magnetic current. The whole point of meditation is to free our souls from the cycle of birth and rebirth and unite ourselves with the consciousness of God. Meditation helps draw our consciousness up the spinal channel and ultimately unites us with the consciousness of God.

Meditation seat - meditation tip number 3, on how to meditate deeply

Having a usual place to meditate or meditation seat is very helpful for anyone serious about advancing in meditation. It is advisable if you have not done so already to set aside a place in your home that is used for no other purpose than meditation. It can be a room or a even a screened off corner of a room and make there a small alter to help sanctify your space.

You will find that you will impregnate that your place of meditation with your consciousness of meditation. Just as a study carries with it the consciousness of study or work or the bedroom consciousness of sleep. So by having a dedicated space for the sole purpose for meditation will make it easier for you to go deeply into meditation. Thereby making the whole experience more enjoyable, and if it is more enjoyable then you are more likely to keep your meditations regular.

Simple Meditation Tips for Beginners and Busy People

The sad truth is that most of us are aware of the benefits of meditation, and yet very few of us actually have a regular meditation practice. Yet this article will show you what meditation really is and give you simple tips for incorporating it into your daily life without changing your current schedule.

So what is meditation? Meditation is about being fully present in the moment and in that moment you are aware of the truth of who you are (beyond your mind, your body or your situation).

Have you ever been in awe of a beautiful sunset so much so that you weren't thinking about what happened five minutes ago or about what you were going to do in the future? And as you took in the majestic sunset, you noticed how you felt really alive inside. You felt pure bliss, joy or peace. And maybe even had a feeling like, It doesn't get any better than this! Well that is meditation!

We often make meditation much more complicated than it really is. Just remember that meditation is about being present in the moment. Therefore, any moment can be your meditation. According to an international survey that I compiled (with results from people in 44 different countries) the biggest obstacle people face in incorporating meditation into their daily lives is: TIME.

We don't have enough time to meditate. (I originally thought this was an American dilemma but discovered that this is a common obstacle for most people around the world). We all have only 24 hours in a day and most of us lead busy lives filled with work, family and other obligations.

Many of us barely have time to workout among the myriad of daily activities that need to get done. Well don't worry; here are three simple ways you can start incorporating meditation into your daily life right now without taking any time out of your current schedule.

TIP #1- Don't Wait-Meditate

Start by converting your waiting time into meditating time. The average person waits 42-60 minutes a day! Think about it: we wait on hold on the phone, we wait for computer programs to download, we wait for appointments and we wait in line at the bank or grocery store.

Yet, those precious moments spent waiting, could be converted to meditating time instead. So next time you are waiting on hold on the phone, take a moment to notice your breath. Or, next time you are waiting in line at the bank take a moment to smile from the inside. While you are waiting for an appointment, notice the aliveness inside your body.

Recently, while waiting for a dentists' appointment I allowed the aquarium in the waiting room to be my meditation. I sat there and noticed the vibrant colors and graceful movements of the fish. So allow waiting time to be your meditating time. If we each did this one simple thing, we'd have a regular meditation practice.

And the other great benefit to converting waiting time into meditating time is that you find you don't mind waiting. I enjoyed being 20 minutes early to my chiropractic appointment because I thought, "Great, I can get in a 20 minute meditation!" Here's what Amy Bush Bradley, a mother of three says, "I think the Don't Wait, Meditate pledge was one of the best things I have done for myself.

It gives me such a pleasurable thing to do during normal "waiting" time that I actually look forward to going places where I will have wait time!"

TIP #2- Pick a Daily Activity in which to incorporate your meditation Another simple thing you can do is pick a daily activity where you can incorporate meditation.

Below are some examples:

* brushing your teeth
* showering
* emptying the dishwasher
* walking
* eating
* folding the laundry

For example, when you brush your teeth in the morning take a few moments to notice your breath while you are doing it. Or when you shower, pay attention to how the water feels moving across your face or head. When you empty the dishwasher notice the placement of each dish or feel the aliveness in your hands as you put each dish away.

And yes, you can even practice meditation while eating. A participant in one of our 21 day meditation circles decided to practice meditation during her daily breakfast. She paid attention to her breathing as she ate. She noticed the texture and taste of the food she put in her mouth.

TIP #3- Have your dog or cat be your meditation

The majority of the population owns a pet, yet we don't realize that our dog or cat can be our meditation. One time while meditating my cat Vinnie came up to me and started meowing. He wanted my attention. And rather than try to ignore him, I opened my eyes and started petting him. I noticed the feel of his fur while petting him. He became my meditation.

And if you have a dog, walking the dog can be your meditation. When you walk your dog have you noticed how your dog is just fully in the moment; taking in everything? Well you can do that as well! Next time you are walking your dog, take in your surroundings. Notice the colors and shapes of the trees, houses, etc. Feel your feet as they touch the concrete.

Our dogs and cats can also be great meditation timers if we allow them to be. Often while sitting at my computer throughout the day, Vinnie will come up and demand attention by meowing. I will stop what I am doing (if only for a moment) and sit on the floor with him and just be with him. As you can see, anything can be your meditation. Your life can literally be a meditation.

Those moments you spend throughout the day while waiting, doing a daily activity, driving or walking your dog will really make a difference in your life. If you implement any one, or more, of these tips into your life right now, you will have a regular meditation practice and you will experience more joy, more peace and less stress in your life and your relationships.

Few Tips For Perfect Yoga Poses

The surest pathway to salvation - yoga and meditation practice can be termed as the symphony of life. Practicing yoga and different asanas develop greater discipline. Yoga sadhana unites the mind, body and soul and lead an individual to a state of timeless bliss.

Though yoga evolved some five thousand years back, its utility and benefits are widely recognized. In today's jet edge, human beings often than not, are subjected to anxiety and stress. These mental hazards also have a negative influence on the physical health of the individual. At such a predicament, practicing yoga asanas and meditation help one arise from the material bindings and helps to develop a feeling of deep spiritual insight within. There are many kind of yoga forms, like, Kundalini Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Vikrama Yoga, Iyengar Yoga and many more. Each forms comprise of some simple asanas which leads the practitioner to achieve a state of optimal physical health and bless him with a state of peace.

However, there are certain things that must be kept in mind while practicing yoga. The place where the yoga is to be practiced, ought to be neat and clean. Meditation and Pranayama - the keys to yoga, needs to be practiced in such a state where the mind is free from any kinds of distractions. Soothing music does a lot of good in this regard. Music is believed to be the best healer and concentrator and thus a soothing music enhance the mood of the individual and creates the perfect ambiance to carry out yoga and meditation. The online music company, Spirit Voyage, offers a variety of Meditation music CDs and DVDs collection. ONG by Guru Shabad Sing Khalsa, Yoga Living Series - Meditative Moon by various Spirit Voyage artistes opens the gift of divinity for a yoga practitioner. The natural fabrics does not cling to the body and thus allow the practitioner to perform the yoga asanas with all comfort and ease. Spirit Voyage offers varying yoga clothing for both men and women.

Asanas are the heart of any yoga practice, but it is an utmost necessity to carry out the asanas in accordance to the specific teachings of any yoga instructor.

Anything that is watched, read or listened about yoga, details about the various benefits of yoga practice but often skips the message of instructing an aspirant to practice the different poses in the correct manner. It is an utmost necessity that an individual should choose poses that seem appropriate to his energy level. As a beginner, an aspirant should begin with gentle yoga poses and then work up to stronger ones. He should inhale evenly through the nose throughout the postures. The yoga poses and postures should be steady and soft. If any particular pose is too strainous or giving pain, that should be ceased practicing for that time. Rushing into and out of a pose will not yield any fruit for practitioner, rather the poses should be rightly performed, slowly and carefully.

A yoga aspirant should not continue with a pose if he is having a permanent injury and which could be strained by a particular yoga pose. Trying hard to achieve the perfection of a pose like the yoga instructor is not a wise thing. Forcing the body beyond the limit will only cause injury. One should not make it a habit of practicing yoga poses and asanas in front of the mirror. The perfection of the poses depend on the benefits and not how it looks like.

Looking for effective meditation techniques for beginners? You're in the right place. For beginners, there are some simple steps to help you take advantage of the tremendous benefits of the practice of meditation.

Meditation Techniques - posture.
There are many traditional meditation posture on the Internet and the selection of meditation techniques to practice , depends on your physical health and spirit and purpose of meditation. General posture practice of meditation is sitting cross-legged on the ground. But if you have pain in joints or in the pelvic area, sitting on a chair or a meditation cushion is postural your right. Just hold your spine erect, is right meditation posture for beginners. With the ultimate in flexibility in their body and practice of meditation, traditional meditation posture loved can be practiced. Any posture to practice meditation for beginners is effectively allowed.

Meditation techniques - Focus
: Count your breaths is perhaps the simple technique of meditation for beginners. Meditation on your every breath and passing out. Do not be disappointed when you do you press the rhythm of your breath again. Do not stress your mind to regulate the breath .. Just watch your breathing who comes and goes and rhythm. Gradually, begin practice on the meaning to see, feel and touch. After the perfection of the practice of breathing meditation, begin to realize all the positive thoughts coming in and out of negative thoughts during meditation practice.

The aim for beginners to practice meditation is to withdraw from many thoughts of many things and you concentrate on inner of your life subtle. Just little practice of meditation is to give you the freedom of many disturbing thoughts and relax the physical body, senses and mind.

Meditation techniques - time and place
Mourning is the best time to practice meditation. But every time, while your mind is in relaxed situation is good for beginners. The location and natural quiet is the best for the practice of meditation. But if you have the problem, anywhere in your office or home is good for the beginning practice meditation. .

Understanding meditation and its objective - for beginners.
There are a number of videos available to understand meditation, its purpose and benefits. Choose the one that suits your lifestyle and faith .. In meditation practice, try to feel his spiritual wisdom. These videos meditation should be your visual guide and teacher on the path of spiritual development and meditation.

For the beginner. the purpose of practicing meditation is to launch awareness. Meditation is a means of direct experience of his body, senses and thoughts on a desired object - in your case, breathing, sense of light, sound and smell, and lastly your thoughts and emotions . .

For me you can not say, consciousness, until you remove your sense of observation of breathing and sense of reflection of light, sound and smell and your thoughts and emotions. . . And just listen to your inner sense of sight. What you feel the consciousness of light is your perception of consciousness. True consciousness arises when you develop your meditation to control thought and conscience. The actual experience of consciousness is a direct experience with its subtle selfishness of his life and practice to become aware of his inner consciousness. Here you are familiar with your inner self within, but not the wisdom of your own thought and speech. It is called the Samadhi meditation master. Here you are disconnected from your sense of seeing the light and sense of reflection of light.

Yogi-Nomad: Yoga Nepal, Teacher Training Courses And Retreats In India

Yoga is an ancient spiritual concept that originated in the East, namely India and Nepal. Yoga is a reference to traditional physical and mental practices that have been used for thousands of years in India and the East and is now benefitting the lives of yoga practitioners throughout the world. Despite its philosophical look it has a physical basis that equals the spiritual. Yoga is a series of practices, action, method and technique that calms the mind and channels energy in positive directions.

It is still not established as to precisely how long Yoga has been with us, but Yoga experts have so far concluded that the history of Yoga spans between 4000 to 8000 years ago to the present day. The earliest yoga findings have been found at the Indus Valley civilization's sites, and these were active around the Indus Valley region in India circa 1700 – 3300 BC. Of course, there will always be new discoveries and Yoga findings and no one as yet could give a definite timeline for this ancient tradition.

Several seals were discovered at the Indus Valley civilization sites in North West India that showed people in meditative yoga like postures. Many experts agree that these seals were depicting a precursor of modern day yoga. One of the most well known and famous seals discovered in India was discovered by Sir John Marshall and is called the Pashupati seal. It depicts a three faced figure seated on a throne in a version of the Hatha yoga, a cross legged yoga posture. Both heels of the yogi sit directly under the scrotum and the yogi's penis is erect, with the testicles clearly visible. The position of the heels is an advanced Tantric yoga known as Bhanda. This yoga method has been traditionally used redirect sexual energy and can give the practitioner spiritual powers. The figure on this seal is thought to be Shiva. On the right hand side of this figure a large tiger rears upwards facing him and some suggest it represents the yogi people and the Himalayan region, whereas a depiction of elephant on the Shiva seal represents Eastern India, the buffalo represents Southern India and the rhinoceros represents the regions to the west of in the Indus River.

Whatever the exact starting date of yoga is, one thing is very clear, India has had a long history with the practice of yoga and still today it is considered the primary place in the world to study and practice yoga. Many yoga practitioners wishing to take their yoga studies further often go to India for teacher training courses at the numerous workshops there. There are many teacher training courses in India that take place in workshops at ashrams and yoga retreats in India throughout the year. And the number of yoga teacher training centres in India is growing yearly as the world grows smaller and more people are heading to India the spiritual heart land of Yoga, and learning how to pass on the yoga light itself, by teaching others this ancient practice from India.

Yoga practitioners who travel to India to practice yoga often beeline for the holy city of Varanasi and join one of the many yoga ashrams or yoga retreats that have established themselves there. For many westerners the ultimate yoga experience is to become part of an ashram in Varanasi, experiencing Indian culture first hand and practicing yoga to their heart's content under the skillful guidance of experienced yoga teachers in a workshop.

Varanasi is one of the world's oldest living cities where time and has stood still in many ways. For several thousand years and still today Varanasi is one of the most religious areas of Northern India for Hindus and many will go there to be buried in the holy River Ganges that flows through the city. Varanasi has been a centre of Indian philosophy, yoga, mysticism and Ayurveda for so long that many hard core yoga practitioners feel it's almost a necessity to practice yoga in a Varanasi ashram to achieve a high level of yoga ability. Teacher training courses (TTC) and workshops are also available in many of the Varanasi ashrams and retreats and there is a constant stream of westerners travelling to India and in particular Varanasi to take their yoga practice one stage further and become a teacher of yoga at a teacher training centre. At Varanasi there is a great traditional of teaching yoga, learning yoga and practicing yoga and this tradition still carries on today in ashrams all over the city.

Yoga teacher training courses (TTC) in Varanasi and all over India are usually completed at ashrams or yoga retreats. An ashram is a place where students of Indian philosophies can go to study with experienced teachers and with as little as possible disturbance from the outside world. Ashrams in Varanasi are also called yoga retreats and a yoga class is called a yoga workshop.

Everyone is welcomed at ashrams in India, from beginner yoga practitioners to more experienced people that are taking teaching training courses in yoga workshops, hoping to one day become a yoga teacher themselves. Teacher training courses (TTC) include being taught how to understand, correct, assist, encourage and guide students in yoga. As well as this, the teacher training courses teach people practical teaching methods for yoga workshops, such as making yoga lesson plans and teaching educational techniques to explain the principles of yoga.

The widespread use of yoga throughout the western world is largely due to its health benefits, and many westerners with chronic health problems are now practicing yoga as a resort to tackle these issues. Many people are now aware of the physical benefits of practicing yoga which include improved flexibility, greater strength, better concentration and improved posture.

The Sanskrit word yoga has many meanings and is actually derived from the Sanskrit verbal root ‘yuj' which means to "yoke" or "join" with the supreme spirit. A fair translation would be that yoga helps a person to absorb and reach a state of union with a divine spirit using the spiritual and physical practices of yoga. Yoga is a scientific practice that teaches people the method of uniting the individual soul with the Supreme soul.

When regularly meditating, as you start to notice your feelings that have been accumulating inside your mind tend to naturally vaporize. One must not do anything special to have this happen to them, it will happen naturally as your concentration deepens and your mind starts quiets down.You might start your meditation session stressed and worried about small stuff, but after you have been meditating for half an hour you start to feel lighter and worry free.

To better release these feelings, you could practice techniques in meditation that require awareness, or just inviting in whatever is bothering you so your mind can let it go.When you practice letting your experience be, and that includes you criticisms and judgments, you may begin to realize that your self attitude starts to change in subtle ways. You may also notice that you have developed more compassion for your self.If you are looking for the easiest instructions on how to relax you are in the right place.

We can talk about the benefits of meditation forever, but if you have actually tried doing it you are going to find out fast that your mind can be very stubborn and does not want to quiet down. Some meditation masters like to compare the mind to training a puppy you know how hard it can be. The more you try to force your mind to quiet down the more it doesn't want to stop.So when trying to relax when meditating you are going to gently return your mind when it strays again and again to your chosen point of attention.

where to sit while meditating.

When i was in college i began to meditate, after school i used to take the subway to a meditation center in the east side of Manhattan. Every Time i would enter the meditation center, the smell of incense used to calm me down and then i knew i was in a special place. A place where i can be peaceful. And as i would start meditating, i could feel my breath and my mind slow down. I began to get frustrated to find that i couldn't relax and have the same quality of meditation i experienced there on the mat me and my friends shared. In the years i have been meditating i started noticing that the environment surrounding your meditation, where you sit, what you wear or the energy that you invest, will have an impact on your meditation. Trying to relax while counting your breathe in a busy environment can be a challenge, but you will go deeper fastest in a place where you can have some quiet time. In this modern time we are constantly being bombarded with stimulation, like TV, music, radio etc.. and it can be hard to find the place or even time to meditate, so what i do is meditate with music, no i don't mean that heavy metal CD sitting on your car, what i listen to is slow jazz, or some kind of rhythm that will slow me down. So by i means you could use your favorite CD to slow your mind down. When you have successfully slowed down you can move on to your quiet space, and if your mind starts to wander, bring it back to the music.

What to wear when meditating.

This may seem like an easy one, but you may be surprised when you go to a meditation center and people show up with jeans, which makes it impossible to cross your legs or even breathe right. One should wear loose clothing to be able to breath deeply and keep your circulation going in the right way.

The right time to meditate?

The tradition is to meditate one hour after one wakes up, or the best time will be before the sun come up. Your mind is awake and well rested by sleep, and usually after you wake up your mind isn't obsessing and worrying yet, so you can stay more focused and you may find it easier to stay present. The benefits to meditating when you wake up is that you set the tone for a peaceful and less stressing day. People may take an hour or two to fully wake up from an eight hour rest, and others find it easy to roll right out of bed, drink their morning coffee and rush right out to work. If you are the kind of person that has a hard time getting up and is in a bad mood it may be better for you to meditate before going to bed, if fact that's what i do. When i meditate before going to sleep i find that my sleep is way more restful and i need less of it to wake up energized. There is a downside to meditating before bed, you may be too tired or stressed at the end of the day and may want to go right to sleep. If you are a parent and spend all your free time taking care of the kids, from school, activities, sports, dinner etc.. what you can do is instead of reading the newspaper or watching TV you can meditate instead. Sex is similar to meditation in many ways, and one of them is that you may want it to be short, quick, long or slow. When you apply this comparison to meditation, you will get the drift, if you are not able to set the half an hour to meditate for a couple minuets. Setting five to ten minuet meditation periods once a day is better than meditating one hour a week even though you may want to do both. The best way to find out what best suits you is to try a bunch of different options.

How long to meditate

When you are a beginner a couple of minuets may seem like an eternity, if you are just starting off you can increase the time of your sittings as your interest and enjoyment grows. When your body and mind start to slow down your time is up, that may be a sign that your meditation muscle is getting stronger and may need to extent your sitting time. Most people may need several minuets to start settling, so when you get to the point where you are meditating 15 to 20 minuets try doing it for a couple of weeks at a time to build your concentration. As your concentration begins to strengthen you will begin to settle faster into a focused and relaxed mind. When you are at the point where your can sit for thirty to forty minutes at a time each day by all means do it regularly, and you will understand why most meditation teachers recommend the long stretch. Regular practice is better than meditating a long time one day than abstaining the rest of the week.
